Notice the pattern. Reflect on what it means. Choose what comes next.
Pattern Play is a reflective card game from The Hidden Pattern Project, built around three kinds of cards—Notice, Reflect, and Choose—to help you slow down, look at familiar dynamics from a different angle, and consider what you want to do with what becomes clearer.
This page gives you a small glimpse of the experience. The full Pattern Play deck is available in the THPP Store.
What is happening beneath the moment?
What changes when you look at it again?
What do you want to do with what you see?
Three kinds of cards. One conversation that can go deeper.
Pattern Play does not ask you to rush toward a conclusion. The deck moves through three distinct lenses—Notice, Reflect, and Choose—so you can first identify what is happening, consider what it brings up, and then think about what you want to do with that awareness.
What is happening?
Notice cards slow the moment down so you can look at what repeats, shifts, feels inconsistent, or deserves a closer look.
What does it bring up?
Reflect cards invite you to consider your reactions, assumptions, needs, boundaries, and the meaning you are making from the experience.
What do you want to do with what you see?
Choose cards turn awareness toward options, priorities, boundaries, or next steps without telling you there is one correct decision.
One card. One moment. A different way of seeing it.
Here is one example of a Reflect card. The full deck uses Notice, Reflect, and Choose cards together to explore a much wider range of dynamics without telling you who someone is or what you are supposed to conclude.
Take a moment with the card. Notice where your attention goes first—and whether the question changes what feels important.
The words changed. Did the pattern?
After a difficult moment, someone says all the right things. For a while, everything feels different. Then the same behavior begins to return.
What carries more weight for you: the promise of change, or the pattern that follows it?

The sample is only the beginning.
The complete Pattern Play deck goes beyond a single scenario. It is designed to help you explore recurring dynamics from multiple angles while leaving the meaning-making in your hands.
Look beyond isolated moments and consider what the larger pattern may be showing you.
Explore what happens when needs, limits, expectations, or reactions enter the picture.
Notice the distance between words, actions, intentions, impact, and what happens next.
Consider what you know, what you question, and what changes when your own experience gets more room.
A prompt can open a conversation without trying to finish it.
Pattern Play was created for personal reflection, but the format can also support thoughtful conversation in professional settings when it fits the professional’s role, judgment, and scope. It is a supplemental discussion tool—not a clinical assessment, legal instrument, or diagnostic resource.
Therapy & counseling
Clinicians may choose to use individual cards as supplemental reflection or discussion prompts when appropriate for a client and the therapeutic setting.
Legal & advocacy settings
Attorneys, advocates, case managers, and victim-support professionals can direct people to Pattern Play as an educational reflection resource while keeping legal guidance and case assessment separate.
Workshops & facilitated learning
Educators, trainers, HR or EAP professionals, and facilitators can use selected prompts to encourage discussion about communication, boundaries, perspective, and recurring dynamics without assigning labels.
