Family

Family is often where we first learn what closeness, responsibility, loyalty, conflict, privacy, and belonging are supposed to look like.

Because those dynamics can begin so early, patterns may feel less like patterns and more like the way things have always been. Roles, expectations, traditions, communication styles, and unspoken rules can become familiar long before we have language for them.

Familiar patterns can be the hardest ones to notice.
A Note From Rosie

Narcissism can deeply affect family relationships, often in ways that aren’t obvious from the outside. It can show up through manipulation, control, favoritism, gaslighting, emotional neglect, or making love feel conditional.

What happens inside a family can echo long after childhood.

These dynamics can have long lasting effects, create confusion, self doubt, and unhealthy relationship patterns that carry into adulthood.

By bringing awareness to these patterns, we can begin to break generational cycles and create healthier, more supportive relationships for ourselves and future generations.

What Can Show Up Here

Family patterns often come with history attached.

Families develop their own rhythms, expectations, responsibilities, traditions, communication styles, and ways of responding to stress or disagreement.

Some are spoken openly. Others are simply understood. Over time, those repeated dynamics can begin to shape the roles people take on and what feels normal inside the family.

01
Roles
Families often develop recognizable roles around who takes care of others, who keeps the peace, who challenges things, who stays quiet, or who is expected to hold everything together.
02
Expectations
Expectations around achievement, behavior, responsibility, availability, family traditions, or what someone “should” do can quietly shape interactions over time.
03
Communication
Families may develop familiar ways of handling emotion, disagreement, disappointment, privacy, apologies, affection, or difficult conversations.
04
Loyalty & Obligation
Love, loyalty, duty, tradition, and responsibility can become intertwined, creating family dynamics that may feel different from other relationships.
05
Power & Hierarchy
Age, authority, financial dependence, caregiving, cultural expectations, and family structure can all influence whose voice carries weight and how decisions are made.
06
Comparison & Favoritism
Differences in attention, praise, criticism, expectations, or treatment can create patterns between siblings, generations, or other members of the family.
What feels normal can still be a pattern.

Family dynamics are often difficult to recognize because there may be no clear beginning point. The pattern may simply have existed for as long as anyone can remember.

A person may always be the responsible one. Another may always be protected. Someone may be expected to smooth over conflict. Certain topics may never be discussed.

Familiarity does not automatically tell us whether a pattern is helpful or harmful. It simply explains why it can be difficult to see clearly from inside the family.

Something to Notice

Family patterns are rarely created by one moment.

They are often built through repetition. The same roles, reactions, expectations, stories, and unspoken rules may appear again and again across years.

Some patterns shift as people grow. Others remain familiar even when everyone involved is now an adult.

History can make repetition feel ordinary.
What This Can Look Like

Patterns can travel through a family without looking exactly the same.

The goal here is recognition, not resolution.

A pattern around conflict might look like open arguments in one generation and complete avoidance in another. A pattern around approval may show up through praise, comparison, expectations, or pressure.

Even when the behavior changes, familiar themes around loyalty, control, communication, belonging, emotion, or responsibility can continue to shape family relationships.

Notice what repeats. You do not have to untangle it here.

Familiar does not always mean invisible.

Sometimes simply recognizing a family pattern gives you language for something that has been present for much longer than you realized.
