When Being Productive Becomes Proof that You are Worthy or Loveable
Overworking may feel like reclaiming control. It becomes self-sabotage when an accomplishment is used to avoid pain or prove that you deserve care.
After narcissistic abuse, achievement may become a way to rebuild identity.
You work harder, stay busy, and push yourself toward the next goal. Productivity can provide structure and confidence.
It can also become another place where you abandon yourself.
You may believe rest must be earned through exhaustion. Slowing down makes you anxious. An unfinished task prevents you from enjoying anything else.
Your worth becomes connected to how much you can carry.
How the Pattern Can Hold You Back
Constant productivity can delay emotional processing.
Keeping busy puts difficult thoughts away, but it may also leave little room to recognize what you need, enjoy what you have built, or notice that you are reaching burnout.
Rest is not a prize. It is needed to function well. It is part of maintaining your ability to think, create, connect, and make decisions.
Start by allowing small forms of rest without requiring yourself to justify them. Pause before the task is complete. Spend time doing something with no measurable outcome. Notice the guilt and process that emotion. It takes time to break these habits, but the more you allow self-care, the easier it can become.
