Testing People Until They Leave

When Fear of Abandonment Creates the Outcome You are Trying to Avoid

Testing may feel like protection from abandonment. It can also prevent the open communication that allows connection to grow.

After being deceived, discarded, or repeatedly disappointed, reassurance may not feel believable. You may test whether someone truly cares.

You withdraw to see whether they follow. You hint at your needs instead of naming them. You push someone away while hoping they will prove they will stay. You interpret ordinary distance as rejection and respond before asking what happened.

The test is rarely about manipulation for its own sake. It is basically an attempt to find certainty.

How the Pattern Can Hold You Back

Tests create unintended situations.

A genuinely caring person may become confused, exhausted, or uncertain about how to respond. Their eventual distance can then appear to confirm your original fear that people always leave.

Direct communication offers another path:

  • “I noticed I felt anxious when I did not hear from you.”
  • “I need reassurance, but I am trying to ask for it more directly.”
  • “I am worried about being disappointed.”

This is not a guarantee that the person will react well or that another relationship will never end. But this type of communication can show you whether they respond to honesty with care, clarity, and respect.
