Isolation Can be Mistaken for Independence

When Doing Everything Alone Feels Safer than Needing Anyone

You may believe that refusing support guarantees self-sufficiency. However, freedom also includes the ability to choose connection without surrendering yourself.

After narcissistic abuse, or even during the abuse, independence can become deeply important.

You may promise yourself that no one will ever have enough access to disappoint, control, or manipulate you again. You handle every difficulty privately, reject assistance, and avoid revealing when you are struggling.

This can look like strength from the outside. Internally, it may feel lonely and exhausting.

How the Pattern Can Hold You Back

Healthy independence allows you to trust yourself while remaining open to safe connection.

Isolation says that needing anyone is dangerous.

When you refuse all support, you may carry more than you realistically need to. You also lose opportunities to experience relationships in which help is offered without control, obligation, or hidden conditions.

Rebuilding trust does not require giving everyone access.

Start small. Ask a reliable person for limited assistance. Share something that feels manageable. Notice whether they respect your boundaries and respond consistently.

Trust can be earned in pieces and you become more self-aware in the process.
